Subject
photography histories
Description
Dr. Batchen's "lecture will begin with a simple assertion: history matters! And for the past 200 years, photography has been a dominant means of representing the world around us, a means of recording and disseminating our history.'The presentation of photography's history is therefore a crucial philosophical and cultural issue; its ramifications touch every person and every discipline,' says Dr. Batchen. 'Despite this, we still don't have what I would regard as an adequate account of this history. In fact, ever since photography's invention was announced in 1839, scholars have struggled to find an appropriate way to write a history for it.'In researching his topic, Dr. Batchen explored reproducibility and memory, two aspects of photography he says have not been properly dealt with in prevailing histories of the medium. He argues: 'We need to develop a way of dealing with photography that emulates its own way of being, that acknowledges rather than represses photography's particular qualities and characteristics'.'
